Today, SWAN mainly works with the issue of land rights. Landlessness is one of the main causes of poverty in Nepal. 25% of the population are landless, often also lacking access to financial and government services.
Landless farmers are forced to work for landlords under poor conditions, creating a situation of great social and economic insecurity. This is a big problem in Dang, were a majority of the population are dependent on agriculture as their only source of income.
From 2005 until 2015 SWAN ran a project which aimed at freeing Kamlari workers, the Kamlari Abolition Project, in partnership with Plan International. The Kamlari system was a traditional practice were young girls were sold by their families to work as domestic slaves in the households of landowners, which was banned in 2013.
We are a non-governmental and non-profitable organization working for socioeconomic development in the Dang district of mid-western Nepal. Our aim is to improve the life standard of poor and marginalized local communities. We were established in 1994 and since then we have worked with community mobilization to empower excluded groups, focusing on issues of land rights and the Kamlari and Kamaiya practices of bonded labour.
Donate NowTogether we are working to support landless people and Kamlari/Kamaiya domestic workers and to strengthen their economic and cultural rights. We have conducted various projects concerning for example economic inclusion, income generation, food security, land rights and female empowerment. Our target groups are mainly landless people, people of low caste (Dalit and Janjati), children, women and Kamlari or Kamaiya workers.
